MIDI Controllers: Why do you need one?
Why would you use a controller and how does it help you as a musician?
A controller is necessary to control all the instruments effects that your recording software offers. All recording software today comes with a mixer section, instruments and effects. With a controller, multiple parameters (filters, wet dry, transport controls etc.) can be controller and manipulated. Since our controllers have multiple knobs, faders buttons etc. You can control virtual instruments and effects as though they were hardware instruments.
If you have a synthesizer or an effect like a delay they have multiple knobs on them which change the sound and control the device. Without a controller, you are restricted to using your mouse. A mouse can only control one knob (or parameter) at a time.
